Leafblower

Once you're done with the leafblower
Would you be a dear
And take out the trash?

No painting today
You might get it on your uniform.

Humiliation at home.

And on the battlefield?

Klan

They're back
Riding pure white steeds
Replacing the white hoods with red caps

Ready to lynch those who dare
To call them what they are
Then burn the fools who put them there.

Death of a Nation.

Substitutes

Look in the eyes
Of the old person
And the baby

Who am I?
Why am I here?
How will I survive?

They want only mercy.
We help them in the little ways we can
Knowing we are poor substitutes for fate.

Murk

Turtle up
Turtle down

Turtle up
Turtle down

Diving into the comforting murk
Only to surface again
To see if anything has changed.

It hasn't.
Grab another breath
And keep hoping.

Sailors

I can no longer reach for the stars
My old friends, my future brothers and sisters.

So I sail.

I tack, I gybe, I reach
Always seeking the wind
And the peace that has become so hard to find.

I leave my troubles, my pain,
And my legacy
In my wake.

To merge with the waves
Left behind by my fellow sailors
Who have all sailed this ocean before.

Choice

What does a body do
When it votes for cancer?
For destruction of itself?
For suppression of its
life
liberty
And pursuit of happiness?

It fights for survival
Until victory
Or death.

There is no other choice.

Sir

We're not looking at a cure
Said the doc.

We're seeking an extension.

We can't win this.

I said,
Oh yes we can, sir.

Dawn

I have slept through too many dawns

As a worker I could only vaguely note them on my way in

As a night owl I only encountered them
In a sleepless stupor at the end of a night under the stars

I have cursed the dawn after sleepless nights

Dawn deserves better
If only I could rise to meet it.

Music

The world as we wish it were
So colorful, so meaningful

Joyful, sad, moving beyond reality
As we are inwardly moved to outwardly move

What would we be without music?
Would we be human?

Music is the ultimate hope for humanity
And proof
That we are not all evil and destructive.

1/4-20

The woodworkers
Have my supreme admiration

But give a talentless layperson
A few furring strips
A handsaw
A basic drill and a few wood screws
A handful of 1/4-20 nuts and bolts...

Behold a minimalist creation
That serves a purpose with grace
So well that we can agree
There is a place in God's workshop
For everyone.

Ski

I ski uphill without the snow
Minus boots I barefoot go

There is no chalet at the top
I ski right up until I stop

I look around in wide-eyed wonder
The Earth is up the sky is under

As I move up I go straight down
I've lost my mind I know not how.

Dollar

I gave a dog a dollar
I could have made it smaller
But prices getting taller
And puppy needs a collar.

Thankee much, your highness
I won't forget your kindness
And please forgive, I beg
That pee upon your leg.
